Apple Podcasts: Kids & Family
When it comes to Kids & Family podcasts, our goal is to make it easier for parents to find great shows for their kids and help creators find audiences for their shows. Below, you’ll find some recommendations for how to optimize your kid-first content to best serve listeners.
Choosing the right category
If the main audience for your show is children, there are three category options available. You can choose more than one category, but whichever you list first will be the category that appears on your show page and will determine which charts your show appears in.
- Kids & Family: The overall category, designed to encompass a broad range of content.
- Kids & Family > Stories for Kids: This subcategory of Kids & Family is for a range of story-first content, from fairytales to kid’s fiction to bedtime stories.
- Kids & Family > Education for Kids: This subcategory of Kids & Family is for content that will help kids learn something new.
- Kids & Family > Parenting should be reserved for content whose main audience is parents.
- Kids & Family > Pets & Animals should be used for content relating to animals broadly.
Reporting a suitable age range for your show
We recommend including an age range or development period in your show description. We hear from parents that age is one of the determining factors when they’re looking for shows for their children, so including your intended age range in the first place parents look is incredibly helpful.
Below are two examples of age breakouts:
Using the Explicit tag
Creators are responsible for labeling their shows and episodes with the Explicit tag if they contain explicit content (for example, profanity or content that may not be suitable for children).
How we curate the Kids & Family page
The Kids & Family page is a destination for parents to find quality, age-appropriate audio content for their kids. In the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, Apple Podcasts has partnered with Common Sense Media, a nonprofit that’s working to make the digital world better for kids and families.
The content featured on the Kids & Family page is curated in collaboration with experts at Common Sense Media who rate and review content with a research-backed rubric. This means each show is hand selected to ensure a high level of quality and safety for parents looking to play family-friendly podcasts for their child. The page is refreshed monthly with new show and episode recommendations, and around specific values and cultural moments, such as Pride in June and Back to School in the fall.
Our Kids & Family page has collections and shows for kids of all ages. While most of these curations feature podcasts made specifically for kids, some include shows from other categories, like Science and History, that are appropriate for older kids as well.
